Each year Kansas City Small Business Monthly recognizes 25 outstanding Kansas City area businesses with fewer than 25 employees. As a winner, SoftVu was honored at an awards dinner and gala on March 3, 2007, at the Downtown Marriott and was featured in a special section in the February 2007 issue of Kansas City Small Business Monthly. Until the 25 Under 25 Awards®, no formal recognition program existed in the Kansas City area that specifically targeted businesses of this size. Yet this segment of business comprises the largest number of companies both locally and nationally, with roughly 83 percent of Kansas City area and 86 percent of businesses nationwide employing 19 or fewer employees. Nominations are accepted from the business community from August 1 to mid-October each year. Qualified nominees complete an application and provide additional support materials that are reviewed by a panel of third-party judges from the business community. The panel of judges reviews the applicants and selects the final 25 honorees based on financial soundness; ability to overcome obstacles or challenges; community involvement; unique qualities; and company vision. The March 3 awards dinner and gala was centered on the theme “Small Business Rocks!” Former KCTV5 anchor Valissa Smith emceed the award presentation, and the Dave Stephens Band arrived from Los Angeles to provide musical entertainment for the evening. The gala also honored Robert Bernstein, co-founder and CEO of the 2007 Entrepreneurial Legacy Award, which is given annually to an individual whose contributions to entrepreneurship have had an enduring impact on the community.
